You have to carry the resulting 1, which means you need to add an imaginary black pearl to the next column on the left. The obelisks tell you that 0+0 is 0, 1+0 is 1, 1+1 is 10 (the L-shape), which is the slightly tricky part. You have to add the two upper rows, the third row (the one you can click) is supposed to be your sum. One of the colours is 1, the other 0, I'm not sure if it changes from game to game. I would never ever have gotten the idea of using it to solve the puzzle myself, binary just isn't part of my experience range/mindset/knowledge base/whatever!
