Today, students from the private schools are upbeat to all rounds of the competition in areas like editorial writing, feature writing, news writing, sports writing, copy reading and headline writing, editorial cartooning, photo journalism and radio broadcasting. In the early days of its implementation, only public schools participated in the yearly tilt. I believe students in school organs are usually those among the brightest and could be considered the reflection of the schools they represent.

This law transcends to the minds, hearts and souls of students and teachers. Thanks to this 20-year old law, RA 7079 or the Campus Journalism Act of 1991.

I was flattered, too, and I occasionally glanced at her (and at her award, too) every time I visited the archive of PDI. Indeed, she won and brought home a brand new laptop as her prize. She made it an entry to the Philippine Daily Inquirer lesson plan making contest, calling it “Wordless Editorials” which she designed for sixth graders. She said, she was inspired by one of my talks and eventually used editorial cartoons in the classroom setting. I always enjoy the sight of sharp pencils.Ībout two years ago, after conducting a lecture to students in Davao, a DepEd supervisor whom I barely knew approached me. So weird…I bought 1,000 pencils, have them sharpened and placed them in a vase on top of my desk. I could still recall how I spent my first salary.

After finishing two college degree courses, my doodling hobby enveloped again especially during my free time. But drawing was not a foreign matter in my veins when I got the artist of the year award way back my elementary years. While my first love was writing, I also explored the world of editorial cartooning. With that time stretch, I gathered wonderful memories with young student-journalists of this region, especially about their desires to become full-fledged members of the mainstream media someday.
